General setup choice based on the application

Based on the intended DBS application that a laboratory wants to perform, the instrumental steup must be adjusted.

Standard LC-MS/MS applications

Basic DBS-LC-MS/MS methods require the following:

  • CAMAG DBS-MS 500 or CAMAG DBS-MS 500 HCT
  • Binary LC pump to run a gradient.
  • Column oven
  • Mass spectrometer

Using this setup, the analysis of drugs of abuse, TDM etc. is possible.

Online-SPE-LC-MS/MS applications

More advanced DBS-Online-SPE-LC-MS/MS methods require the following:

  • CAMAG DBS-MS 500 or CAMAG DBS-MS 500 HCT
  • 2x Binary LC pump to run a gradient.
  • Column oven
  • Mass spectrometer
  • switching valve (e.g. 6/2 or 10/2)

Using this setup, the analysis of Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is possible.

Offline DBS applications

For the offline sampling of DBS into sample vials or microtiter plates (e.g. 96-well plates) the following equipment is required:

  • CAMAG DBS-MS 500 or CAMAG DBS-MS 500 HCT
  • CTC PAL autosampler with a dilutor tool, a sample rack and a needle wash station, optionally The CTC PAL can be upgraded with an active sample wash station and a peltier stack for storing the extracts at 4°C

Using this setup, further manual sample processing (e.g. ELISA) is possible.
